About the Author

A Journey

Born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria, Rosemary immigrated to the Bronx, New York City, at sixteen. She completed high school at Jane Addams Vocational High School and was a member of the National Honor Society. At Williams College, she earned a Bachelor of Arts in psychology with a concentration in neuroscience. She subsequently pursued and earned a Doctor of Medicine degree. She now practices medicine under her married name.

Though dedicated to her medical career, Rosemary has rekindled her lifelong passion for storytelling. For her, writing heals the heart, inspires the mind, and soothes the soul. The themes in her writing are GISTH (Gender, Identity, Society, Trauma, and Healing).

Her acclaimed debut novel, The Looming Fog (2006), explores identity formation and self-development in a rural Nigerian village. Her latest work, a hybrid prose-poetry memoir, reflects on pivotal traumas that shaped her resilience and grace.

Rosemary sees herself as a paradoxical chameleon—she’s a devout Christian, feminist, intersex advocate, wellness advocate, survivor, an amateur dancer, and so much more. She believes that embracing one’s whole self, scars and all, is the key to true freedom.

The Looming Fog

The Looming Fog is about life in rural Nigeria as seen through the eyes of an abandoned intersex child. As the child struggles to establish its identity and role in the village, the stories of other villagers and their struggles to fit into, or break free of, their assigned roles are revealed.

The Looming Fog

The Looming Fog is Rosemary Esehagu’s debut novel skillfully depicting the story of an abandoned child whose life-long difficulties are the cause for a deeply horrific isolation and loneliness. Following the child though the horrors of being [intersex], The Looming Fog gradually eases into the inspiring telling of a life in which solitude is accompanied by others searching to break free of the societal expectations and assigned roles. The Looming Fog is very strongly recommended reading for all who have ever been different from others around, and those who appreciate an intimate story with a remarkable outcome suffused with the bittersweet truths of dreamers everywhere.
