Rosemary Esehagu

  • Out of the Cocoon: The Journey to Becoming is a hybrid prose and poetry memoir that takes an intimate look at the author’s experience with childhood sexual abuse in her native country, emotional abuse as an immigrant, and racism and sexism as a black woman. The focus of these intimate reveals is to show the damaging effects of these negative experiences while understanding that the negative effects do not have to be permanent or self-limiting. The author, using her personal experience and her education (she has a psychology degree and a medical degree), gives insights about how to move from wounded to healed, from trauma to growth.

There are some luminous moments of observation. . . . Such moments hint at a wonderfully radical unearthing of self.

A profound journey of resilience, "Out of the Cocoon" is a soaring legacy of healing, strength, and the triumph of Light. … There are no words in the English language that would best describe the immensely profound power that each line of Rosemary Esehagu's prose conveys. I do not think I know how to best describe the intense and transformative journey I went through as I traversed through this book of poetry. And I do not know how to properly summarize what a glorious legacy of strength and resilience this book truly is. I devoured it in one sitting. … Her message throughout every piece is that Light always wins, no matter how much darkness tries to snuff it out. There is always a soaring transformation to be found in the things that try and destroy us.
